It is difficult to answer the question: "What is the best city in Europe?" but it is even more difficult to choose a fantastic European destination for the summer. Europe becomes the international playground for vacationers abroad and even in their own Union. This makes for busy tourism seasons and higher prices. Tourists shouldn't worry; there is something magical about a European summer which is worth your money and time.

Riga, Latvia: Eastern European cities are the perfect way to enjoy a historical trip on a budget. In the city of Riga, summer brings out the best with summer terraces filled with locals simply enjoying the long evenings. Who doesn't love cobbled streets; Riga is filled with 800 years of old streets decorated in Baroque style. You can even get your beach time fulfilled at Jurmala, which means seaside in Latvian. It is a strip of golden sand with excellent spas and resorts.

Faro, Portugal: Most tourists do not know that Faro is the city with the highest average hours of sun per year in Europe. (Over 3,000 hours per year.) This means 11 hours of time to soak up the sun. What makes the city attractive is the European charm; its mix of Roman and Arab influence. Enjoy the large squares and view the old ruins, church structures, and architecture. Close by is the beach which holds many festivals, especially in the summertime. Make sure to enjoy the Rio Formosa; a nature reserve which stretches from Portugal into Spain.

Amsterdam, The Netherlands: If you're a fan of summer festivals, Amsterdam is the sin city capital known for elaborate music festivals. These flat lands are the perfect canvas for wide open space filled with music lovers. Typically, it may not be as warm as other European cities, but the warm summer air and long nights are perfect for the traveler who doesn’t want to sun burn. Enjoy music festivals of all genres and then stick around for some exciting nightlife, bike riding and uninhibited fun.

Crete, Greece: Known as the largest and most populous of the Greek islands, the ancient city of Crete holds a lot more than rich history. Natural beauty and a diverse landscape often enchant travelers to take in the European spirit. Everyone can enjoy the remarkable history of the old ruins, mosques and monasteries which tell tales of Greek Mythology. One will also enjoy the abundance of hospitable villagers who welcome tourists to enjoy quiet beach settlements and villages.

Barcelona, Spain: All year round, Barcelona is a European city many travelers love to explore. This easy to walk city makes it enjoyable to paint the town red and enjoy everything the city has to offer. Even more so does the summertime in Barcelona waken up the city; with the pristine Mediterranean beaches lined with restaurants and bars. Get your fill of tapas and paellas with a delicious glass of Sangria on the promenade for the picture perfect summer moment in Barcelona.
