Myrtle Beach, South Carolina is a great Memorial Day beach destination.

Memorial Day weekend means beach travel!

While some people may already be getting their beach fix, the beach season doesn't officially begin until Memorial Day weekend. Three weeks out from the official start of summer, Memorial Day weekend typically represents the unofficial start of summer when many travelers head for their favorite beaches. To help you decide where to kick off your summer this year, we've rounded up some of the best Memorial Day beach destinations.

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina: Traditionally one of the top family beaches on the east coast, a visit to Myrtle Beach is perfect for frugal travelers as it was recently named a top budget destination. While travelers can rent a beach house or villa, many choose from one of the many high-rise resorts that are spread along the Myrtle Beach strip. It caters to all types of travelers, as many of the attractions and beaches are geared toward families, but it also has a vibrant dining and nightlife scene.

Cape May, New Jersey: Go ahead and put off all those Jersey Shore labels before dismissing Cape May. Located at the far southern end of New Jersey, Cape May is a quaint beach town that is the ideal  retreat. You won't find anything presumptuous about this little town. Cape May is known for their inns in downtown, which are located within walking distance of the beach and great seafood restaurants.

South Beach, Florida: South Beach is easily the most glamorous beach on this list. However, with its location in Southern Florida, there are enough other nearby beaches that you can get a retreat to yourself when you need a break from the hustle and bustle of South Beach. Booking a room or suite in one of the many high-rise beach hotels will put you right on the beach and within walking distance of some of the area's best restaurants and nightlife.

Sanibel Island, Florida: While Florida's Atlantic Ocean beaches often get most of the attention, the west coast of Florida features some great beaches. Located in Southwest Florida, Sanibel Island is a good alternative if you don't want the vibrancy of the Miami area. One of its best features is the wildlife refuges, some of which are home to various endangered and threatened species. Another notable feature is the large influx of shells that wash up on Sanibel's beaches.

Malibu, California: It's hard to mention the best beaches in the U.S. and not mention at least one California beach. Malibu is the best of both worlds because it is a little more isolated than many of Southern California's beaches, but not so much so that you can't do a day trip to Los Angeles. Of the beaches we've listed, Malibu is the best for surfers. There are also some great outdoor opportunities nearby, including hiking, horseback riding, and bicycling.
