Williamsburg, Brooklyn - A Great Way to Experience NYC | CheapOair, flickr: emilydickensonridesabmx

New York City is huge.  From Broadway to the Highline, The Empire State Building to Time Square, the attractions are endless.  But if you’re like me, you may feel overwhelmed after a few days of site seeing in the Big Apple and be looking for an affordable and intimate cultural experience.  For an exciting day trip, check out the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn. The first stop off the L train, Williamsburg is home to artists, musicians, students and young professionals.  What was formerly a hub of industrial warehouses has become one of the most beautiful and lively areas in all of the five boroughs.  Bedford Avenue is filled with a slew of bakeries, boutiques and bars, each more original than the last.  The summer months are a great time to visit, with free neighborhood concerts, outdoor film screenings, art shows and flea markets. Here are some ideas for a great day in Brooklyn.

I suggest beginning your day with brunch.  Many cafes and restaurants have great brunch deals, with ‘bottomless’ Bloody Marys and Mimosas included in the cost of your entree.  The Lovin’ Cup Café located on North 6th Street, one block away from the L train stop, offers a Prix Fix menu for $15.00, unlimited beverages included.  If the menu doesn’t suit you, many similar cafes and restaurants on the block offer the same deal with various meal options for different tastes.

Once you’ve had your fill, head over to the flea market located on North 7th Street.  Artist & Fleas is a huge indoor market open every Saturday and Sunday from 10a.m. to 7p.m.  Items range from vintage clothing to hand crafted jewelry and original paintings.

After shopping, head down to the East River State Park, between North 9th and 10th streets at Kent Avenue.   Not only can you see a beautiful view of Midtown Manhattan and the Williamsburg Bridge, you may be lucky enough to catch one of the Williamsburg Waterfront concerts.   Former acts include Death Cab for Cutie, Thievery Corporation, Kid Cudi, Sonic Youth and TV on the Radio.   It’s best to check the schedule ahead of time since many shows are free but some require ticket purchase.

Ready for dinner? There is no shortage of dining options, and you can get anything from sushi to French cuisine within a two block radius.  If you’re interested in a one of a kind dining experience, I suggest Surf Bar, also located on North 6th Street.  When you walk in you immediately feel like you’re in a Californian surf shack.  The entire restaurant is filled with sand and lined with surf boards and beach themed décor.   Their menu is Americana and their drinks are tropical.  I prefer sitting in the back deck area during a nice summer night.  The atmosphere is relaxing and a nice change from the hustle and bustle of Manhattan.

If you’ve survived this day of fun, the nightlife in Brooklyn is one of its best assets.  Head down to Brooklyn Bowl for a game of bowling, beer and live music, located on Wythe Avenue between North 11th and 12th streets.  For a calmer conclusion to your day, head to McCarren Park for the SummerScreen free outdoor movie screenings.  You can bring blankets, snacks and beverages and unwind under the stars, if you can find any!

You’ll enjoy your day and save some money with all the free activities and dining deals!
