Airport Travel Tips: Smart Summer Travel Clothing Choices

Start Shopping for Those Clothes Today!

As the warmer weather approaches, it’s important to consider comfortable clothing choices especially when you travel. The trouble with airports is that the air conditioning system can kick into overdrive when the weather is exceptionally hot outside, or just not be cranked up enough.

Here are five smart summer fabrics to wear this season:

Linen: They say, “Linen for summer, tweed for winter” and that may not be a bad rule of thumb. Linen as a fabric attracts less lint and is extremely lightweight (thereby making it a good travel companion). It is exceptionally cool during the summer months because it easily absorbs perspiration. Opt for linen skirts, pants and blazers when you travel---linen blazers look exceptionally smart and come in a range of colors. The only downside? You need to press this fabric often because it’s prone to wrinkles.

Cotton: Linen is dressier than its summer cousin, cotton, but cotton packs well and doesn’t need as much ironing as linen. The big advantage of cotton is that it wears well across several seasons, and will hardily weather several loads of washing and drying. Most people will find linen cooler than cotton during the summer.

Jersey Knit: This knitted fabric was originally made out of wool but obviously if we’re recommending it to you for summer, it’s become a lot cooler than that! Currently jersey knit fabrics are excellent choices for the warm weather because they’re made with a blend of wool, cotton or synthetic fibers (and you can be sure that no self-respecting retailer will put out wool blends during June, unless you lived in Alaska). This fabric is most often used for tee shirts, which are smart travel choices for the summer (there are some brands, including Banana Republic, which make extremely smart looking tees that are work-appropriate for the warmer months).

As a general rule, avoid polyester, rayon, lycra and spandex clothing for the summer because they don’t absorb moisture and perspiration as well as the clothing choices above. Wear loose fitted clothing and if you are flying on planes and are worried about the cooler cabin temperatures, be sure to wear long linen trousers and carry a linen blazer or throw with you so you’re well prepared.
