Top Five: Outer Banks, North Carolina, Flickr: TheRealOuterBanks.com

Kill Devil Hill

Stretching for hundreds of miles off the coast of North Carolina, the Outer Banks offer visitors a chance to explore history and incredible natural beauty.

1.    Catch (or eat) some tasty fish: The Outer Banks boasts an enormous population of fish, just ready for the hook.  If you’ve always wanted to give sport fishing a try, you are in luck.  The OBX is known as the “Billfish capitol of the world” and hundreds of marlin and sailfish are caught yearly.  The islands boast numerous fishing opportunities including pier and surf fishing (with over 100 miles of beach!), chartered offshore boats, and even fishing in the channels and sounds.  Even if you don’t catch a fish (which you are likely to!), enjoy incredibly fresh seafood at one of the 100 local restaurants ready to serve up the day’s catch.

2.    Climb the tallest Lighthouse: Standing tall at 208 feet, Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is the tallest brick lighthouse in the US. Visit this famous lighthouse as well as four other lighthouses that dot the landscape of the OBX.  For two centuries these beacons have helped ships navigate the rough waters of the Atlantic Ocean, including the dubiously named “Graveyard of the Atlantic,” where over 3,000 sunken ships line the ocean floor.  The beautiful lighthouses continue to offer hope to weary seafarers and offer visitors a history lesson with an incredible view.

3.    Explore the Great Outdoors: With so much natural beauty all around you, get out and explore it.  Take in the ocean breeze by stand up paddle board or kayak.  Hang glide over Jockey’s Ridge State Park, the largest natural sand dune on the East Coast.  Search for over 360 species of birds, alligators, black bears, and red wolves at the Pea Island and Alligator River National Wildlife refuges.  Hike (or golf!) through Nags Head Woods Preserve.

4.    Take Flight with Orville & Wilber Wright:
The Wright Brothers’ famous first flight took place at Kitty Hawk on December 17, 1903.  Visitors traveling to the area can study the famous duo at the Wright Bros. National Memorial and Visitor’s Center.  Full scale reproductions of the flight, exhibits and interactive features give guests of all ages the chance to jump in the action.  For a bird’s eye view, climb to the top of Big Kill Devil Hill or charter a helicopter or airplane tour of the area.

5.    Explore the Lost Colony:
The fate of the nation’s first permanent settlement, on Roanoke Island, is ready for exploration. Steeped in mystery, the vanishing of 117 people from the year 1587 is recreated on the OBX every summer in America’s longest running outdoor drama, “The Lost Colony”, at the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site.  Additional historic information is presented through a 17-minute film at the visitor’s center and a stroll through the Elizabethan Gardens, which was built as a memorial to Sir Walter Raleigh and the lost colonists.
