Reykjavik, Iceland

Reykjavik, Iceland made the list of top 10 affordable locations to visit in 2010

The worldwide leader in travel guidebooks, Lonely Planet released its “Best in Travel 2010” book and 17 great and informative travel lists. Being a budget traveler, one list instantly caught my eye - top 10 budget friendly places to check out in 2010.

Some were no-brainers, for example Iceland and Las Vegas, which both suffered greatly from the economic meltdown of 2008 and are now a tourist's paradise. Flights to Las Vegas have significantly dropped in price from just 18-24 months ago and hotels on the Strip are practically giving rooms away.

One destination that made the cut which really shocked me was London. I was just in England's most popular city last month and can tell you that while airfare to London is affordable, it still hurts to land in Heathrow Airport and walk up to the currency exchange booth. Although the British pound is not as strong as it was a few years ago, you still can’t help but feel as if the person behind the counter is holding you up.

But overall travel is much more affordable now than it has been in years. Even though 2009 saw some shockingly low airfares and hotel rates, travel insiders like Christopher Elliott have predicted that 2010 will be the year of the travel deal.

The other locations that made Lonely Planet’s top 10 list of inexpensive locales include South Africa, Kenya, Thailand, Malaysia, India, Bulgaria, and Mexico.
