Shopping with Chelsea Style at London's Duke of York Square, IMG Cred: Chris Osburn

Duke of York Square

The Duke of York Square opened in 2003 and at the time of its launch was the largest new public space created in London for two decades.  In previous incarnations this luxury shopping mecca had been the home of the Duke of York’s army barracks. Before that the square was the site of a school set up in 1802 called The Duke of York’s Royal Military Asylum.

Beyond offering the opportunity to stroll through a living history lesson in spacious upscale surroundings, Duke of York Square is today the home of an impressive range of international retailers, leading restaurant and cafes and office space as well as the iconic Saatchi Gallery.

Located in fashionable Chelsea just off the famed King's Road, Duke of York Square is only a couple of minutes' walk away from Sloane Square Underground Station. Plenty of buses stop next to the square as well. And for anyone preferring a cab, this particularly posh slice of West London has a very decent taxi to pedestrian ratio zipping through at any hour of the day.

At the heart of the Square are 33 diverse and exciting fashion and lifestyle retailers anchored by one of Europe’s largest Zara department stores. Here you can shop for brands like Banana Republic, All Saints, Ted Baker and Joseph. The Square is also the base for fashionista Mary Quant as well as leading international lifestyle retailers, including Taschen Books, Yves Delorme bedroom accessories and Space N.K. Beauty products.

Overwhelmed by the retail wow? The square is also home to the Saatchi Gallery, arguably one of the world’s leading contemporary art gallery with both permanent and visiting international collections of sculpture and art. With free entry to its exhibitions of some of noted and notorious works of art, the gallery is well worth a visit.

Foodies will find Duke of York a haven of good taste as well. From Italian style gelato to gourmet groceries, there's a range of treats for most budgets and all palates. An especially tasty time to visit the Square is Saturday when the square hosts an open air fine food market. The market spills and blends with the greater Chelsea Farmers Market for a forage worthy of a visit in and of itself and provides locals and visitors alike with all sorts of a range of fresh produce and international eating experiences.
