Crowded airports have NYC officials looking for alternatives

All passengers arriving on flights to New York City can attest to the strain put on the three main airports serving the Big Apple. Kennedy and LaGuarida Airports in Queens and Newark Liberty International Airport in northern New Jersey are three of the busiest hubs in the world.

Plans for expansion at all three airports are severely limited by their urban locations, forcing officials to come up with creative alternatives. According to a report from USA Today, Port Authority officials are now offering airlines incentives to fly out of the much smaller Stewart International Airport located in the Hudson Valley.

Sitting just 55 miles north of the city, the hub was recently granted approval for a $20 million expansion that could make it more attractive to passengers. All that’s left is for the airport to attract larger airlines.

According to the report, the Port Authority will pay up to $3 per departing seat for airlines offering new, non-stop service out of Stewart. The authority will also kick in funds for marketing and advertising the new routes.
