Guide to Old Town Portland, Flickr: portland_mike

Old Town

At the heart of Portland is an area where the town was first discovered; the oldest neighborhood is home to the stories of old natives and places untouched. The district itself is a National Historic Landmark, preserved because of its vital history and interesting places to note when visiting Portland.

Eat: Old Town Pizza: Whether you're in town with friends, or traveling solo, you might have an extra unwanted guest with you on a trip to Old Town Pizza. Apparently, the restaurant is home to not only delicious Italian pizza, but Nina, the resident ghost. The restaurant used to be home to an old hotel in the 19th century and legend has it, a former courtesan named Nina was founded dead in the hotel. Regardless, Old Town Pizza opened its doors in the mid-1970s to serve up a traditional family recipe, good ole pizza and beer. You can even get your pizza and beer delivered by bike, a perfect portable meal on the go.

Drink: Central: Looking for an urban retreat where you can enjoy divine cocktails and fun snacks? Central is the quintessential lounge and bar in Old Town Portland. It's a cozy and inviting place with a speakeasy feel that makes you feel just a bit devious for downing a few cocktails. Luckily, the cool ambiance and delicious food (Try the crepes!) will make you feel like being a regular to this hip little space.

See: Portland Chinese Garden: Most locals will tell you that Old Town is also known as Chinatown, where immigrants who flocked from Asia came to settle when Portland was a thriving up and coming city. A slice of heaven and pure nirvana is at the Portland Chinese Gardens, Portland's hidden oasis. It is a fine example of Chinese culture and architecture. The garden only opened in the early 20th century, making it one of the new modern pieces to an old neighborhood.

Do: Portland Saturday Market: Don't you dare leave Portland without exploring the Saturday market, even if you enjoy it on a Sunday. (Because it will be open on both weekend days) Since 1974, the Portland Saturday Market is one of the largest outdoor arts and crafts market. With its location in the Old Town, it brings heart to the tradition of local flavor in the center of the city. Find local artisan crafts from homemade sauces to earrings, even clothes.

Stay: Courtyard Portland City Center: Though it is technically in Downtown Portland, its proximity to Old Town is uncanny. This impressive hotel is a boutique, new hotel that was once an old bank building. You'll enjoy the local artwork in the hotel, making Portland seem central and friendly, which it is. Enjoy budget friendly prices, modern amenities and the ultimate comfort during your Portland stay. Best of all, free parking, breakfast and Wi-Fi!
