The plaza at the Met will soon get a facelift

While New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art houses some of the most beautiful works in recorded history, the plaza outside is in dire need of a facelift. Crumbling sidewalks, dying trees, and leaking fountains are just a few of the problems visitors encounter daily outside of the iconic museum.

The problem is confounded by constant congestion. Because of its central location, the plaza has become one of the most popular outdoor meeting places in Manhattan. Thanks to a generous donation, however; Met officials are moving forward with a $60 million plan to revitalize the plaza, making it more friendly for both visitors and the environment.

OLIN, the urban architectural firm behind recent makeovers of Bryant Park and Columbus Circle, plan to reimagine the space with new seating areas, beautiful fountains, and energy-efficient lighting.

According to a report from the New York Times, the entire project will be financed by David H. Koch, the wealthy philanthropist who previously pledged $100 million to restore the New York State Theater at Lincoln Center.

The plan still needs approval from a number of New York agencies but could kick into gear by summer 2014 if all goes as planned.
