Family Travel: Extra, Extra, Go See Newsies the Musical, Flickr: hoard

 Extra, Extra!

My first celebrity crush involved Christian Bale’s beyond pre-Batman performance in Disney’s little underscored film musical, Newsies. My sister and I must have watched it approximately one million times and I knew every musical number by heart.  With a touch of Disney’s Broadway magic, as they have so beautifully brought to life other Disney classics such as The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, and Beauty and the Beast, Newsies, the Musical is now in its second year on Broadway at the Nederlander Theater in New York City.

Newsies, the Musical was nominated for Best New Musical at the Tony Awards and although it did not win, it did take home the Tony for Alan Menkin’s music and Jack Feldmen’s lyrics for original score and another for Christopher Gattelli’s choreography.  Reviews from all around the country concur that the musical is superb.

The plotline from Newsies comes from nearly 100 years ago, but don’t think it is too old fashioned for your hip youngsters. Its message of hope, courage, love, and youthful vibrancy speaks clearly to a young audience today.  Your children will love taking in a Broadway show in NYC’s famed arena, and this particular show, which runs through the summer of 2013, is sure to be a best bet.  Be sure to ask an usher for directions after the show to the stage door where you can try to snap a picture or snag an autograph of your favorite stars.

If you are looking for a place to rest your head after your night of musical theater wonder, check out the uber hip Morgans Hotel Group, which is offering special discounts for theater goers.  Choose from lodging at one of these four posh locations: The Royalton on West 44th Street, Morgans on Madison Avenue the Mondrian Soho on Crosby Street, or Hudson on West 58th.  Your tweens will swoon at your style selections, and you can savor the discount.

Grab your New York family vacation through CheapOair and you'll be singing yourself...about savings.
