What do you do on vacation? Some of us wear sunscreen, and quite a few of us enjoy the freedom of an empty seat next to us on the plane. And, while we’re at it, we take full advantage of all the soap the hotels offer, and we eat many, many tons of bacon. Here’s a quick taste.

1. We love sunscreen: Every year, enough sunscreen is applied to cover the entire country of Luxembourg in that slippery liquid. While that wouldn’t be a good idea, given that the micro-state consists of mountains and valleys, it’s nonetheless possible.

2. We use hotel soap: It’s not all stolen soap, but some of it probably is (BUSTED!). When traveling, we use almost 450 million kilograms a year! That’s either a 327 billion liter bath or 65,000 male elephants … take your pick.

3. We get elbow room: Are you always hoping the seat next to you will be empty? Well, that happens 237 million times a year – that’s how many seats go unused. It’s equivalent to more than 520,000 747s … which would keep Chicago O’Haire, one of the busiest airports in the United States, completely busy for 217 days.

4. We love bacon: I sure do! And, I tend to eat a lot of it. Whether you order your hotel breakfast or walk up to the buffet, there’s a good chance you order bacon. How can I tell? Well, I’m not the only one eating seven million pigs’ worth a year. Every five seconds, a full pigs’ worth of bacon is consumed.

5. We build dreams: The number of sand castles built by kids every year could fill the Empire State Building an astounding 57 times! That’s almost 60 million cubic meters of sand. Needless to say, that’s a lot of sand castles.
