Tips to find cheaper airfare during the summer months

With the weather getting warmer and more people looking to go somewhere this summer, now is the best time to start searching for cheap airfare. The time between Memorial Day and Labor Day are often times the priciest time to fly, but there are a few ways you can take a vacation during the next couple of months without breaking the bank.

  • Be Flexible: If you're really on a budget when it comes to purchasing airfare, make sure you have some flexibility with the schedule. Leaving just a day later or day earlier could wind up saving you hundreds of dollars.

  • Fly into Smaller Airports and Lesser Known Cities: While most of us would like to simply fly from one international airport to the next, it can pay to take off from a less popular airport and into a small city. For example, instead of booking a flight from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, you might want to look into departing from Westchester County Airport.

  • Book a Midweek Flight: I cannot stress this tip enough to people I know when booking a travel deal. If possible, fly on Tuesday and Wednesday, as they are typically the lowest priced days for air travel.

  • Email Alerts: Sign up for email alerts as they often times advertise fares not on travel websites.

  • Avoid the Big Three: Although it should be obvious to most travelers by now, flying to and from during Memorial Day weekend, Fourth of July weekend and Labor Day weekend is going to cost a lot more. If possible, book your trip a few weeks before or after those big three holidays and you will spend much less.
