Food for Thought: Affordable Eating in London
Yours truly at EAT on Baker Street

London is expensive, but eating there doesn’t have to be. And with so much to do and see in the city this year, chances are – if you’re on one of our cheap flights to London – that you’re more concerned with the Olympic Games or Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee than you are with where your next meal is coming from. For great food any time of day, check out my top 5 personal favorite options for affordable dining in London.

Apostrophe Boulangerie Patisserie Café
The café has a number of locations throughout London, but the George Street location was my go-to place for breakfast or a light snack mid-day. The vegetarian omelet wrapped in a croissant is highly recommended, but the menu also includes gourmet sandwiches for under £5, delicious tarts, cakes and muffins and a wide range of hot drinks all under £3.

Marks & Spencer
If you’re on-the-go like I was, Marks & Spencer offers more than quick food. The combination grocery store and retailer will help you buy a new sweater, get your shoes signed and bag your meal to go, all in one location. The M&S Food on the Move deal includes a fresh sandwich or salad, chips or fruit and a drink for £2.95 at most London locations.

EAT
Similar to the Pret-A-Manger chain (which now has many locations in the U.S.), EAT’s small venues offer the greatest deals on the most delicious fresh sandwiches, soups and salads. And they’re strategically placed – outside the entrance to the Tower of London, for example – so that you can enjoy an entire meal for under £10 no matter what part of town you’re in.

Café Uno
One of the most authentic yet least pretentious places that I’ve ever enjoyed Italian food (and I’m 100% Italian), Café Uno on Charing Cross Road offers a wide range of options, from appetizers to personal pizzas and pasta dishes. A bowl of pasta won’t be more than £10, and a full-size margherita pizza for one is only £6.35.

The Liberty Bounds
Part of the Whetherspoons chain of pubs, which operates many venues throughout the city, this location at Tower Hill offers iconic views of the Tower of London and Tower Bridge. The chain is known for its Beer & Burger special, offering a burger cooked however you like it, a glass of whatever you’re drinking and a large helping of fries for £4.99.
