Family Travel: A Night at the Museum in New York, Really, Flickr: sneakerdog

The Original Blue Whale!

New York City’s gigantic American Museum of Natural History is an incredible day trip to visit with exploring kids.  Think you’ve seen it all?  Parents with night owls should take advantage of the museum’s fabulous “Night at the Museum” overnight sleepover tour for exclusive games, activities, and the chance to sleep in some of the museum’s most iconic rooms.

Based on the popularity of the film, “The Night at the Museum,” let your kids test the magic of the movie and spend the night in the museum during their “A Night at the Museum” tour offered select nights out of the year.  With advance reservations, parents and their curious kids can pack their sleeping bags, pillows, flashlights, PJs, and toiletries and head to an overnight campout at the museum. The first, second, third and fourth floors, including the lower level and the Rose for Earth and Space area are open for exploration during your visit, and single day admittance to the museum is also included with your sleepover package.

The night starts out as your small group searches for fossils through the darkened museum with flashlights in hand.  After the search is over, kids can watch the animals as they wind down their day in one of the live-animal exhibitions.  Museum Quests are available for kids interested in an exciting challenge.  Enjoy the IMAX Theater as you watch a late night showing of Flying Monsters, featuring the Pterosaurs dinosaur species.  You’ll pass by the iconic T-REX from the film and visit the Anne and Bernard Spitzer Hall of Human Origins during your visit.   Three sleeping areas, all equipped with provided cots, are available for bed-time: under the 94-foot-long blue whale, next to the African elephants, or at the base of a volcano!

General pricing starts at $119/person and the tour is only available to parents and their children between the ages of 6-13.  Admission price includes a late night snack and light breakfast.  The 2013 calendar is available here.  To register or request more information, call Central Reservations - (212)-769-5200, or email sleepovers@amnh.org.

Takea bite out of your next New York City family vacation!
