Five Interesting Eco Facts About Costa Rica

National Corcovado Park in Costa Rica

Costa Rica has an unwavering commitment to preserving its ecosystem, and it's a country that many look up to for its biodiversity and sustainable practices. Here are some fun eco facts you may not have known about the land that offers both beautiful beaches and houses endangered species.

Nature Parks System: The Parks System debuted in 1977, and currently its efforts are felt across all the 26 National Parks. All the Parks are managed under the umbrella of the country's Ministry of Environment and Energy. The sustainable ecotourism model of several of its National Parks are considered the blueprint  for other countries.

Conserving the Land Through People: The Ticos --the natives of Costa Rica--have had one lofty eco mission: to exist harmoniously with nature. There has been much emphasis placed on conserving local resources in recent years. Programs like the Certificate for Sustainable Tourism (CST) ensures that the modern development of the country still preserves the rich natural heritage.

Prosperity Through Coffee: Coffee production was a major source of export in the 1800s and it still is. Costa Rica is so well known for the strong, dark nature of its coffee. The carreta (oxcart) was used to transport coffee across the country, and this oxcart is now such a well-known symbol even though they are no longer used.

Wide use of Organic Products: Costa Rican restaurants pride themselves in using nothing but the freshest organic products--without thinking of it too much. Therefore the culinary pleasures are one of the highlights of a trip to Costa Rica. Farm to table techniques are widely practiced here.

"Lungs of the Earth": Corcovado, the National Park is considered the "lungs of the Earth" because of its extreme density. It houses half of the 500,000 species found in the country. Located on the Osa Peninsula in southwest Costa Rica, this National Park is extensive in its ecological variety.
