The Windy City is shaking up its tourism efforts

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has announced some major changes concerning the future of the Windy City tourism efforts. In an attempt to save money and have more visitors board flights to Chicago, the city’s two major tourism units will soon become one.

The Chicago Convention and Tourism Bureau is set to merge with the Chicago Office of Tourism and Culture, according to a new report in the Huffington Post. The newly formed unit will double the existing visitor advertising budget.

The overhaul is aimed at boosting Chicago as an international destination and has an ultimate goal of attracting 50 million visitors by 2020. You may recall that New York City hit the coveted 50 million mark in 2011.

According to the report, the increased tourism could add up to $4 billion in revenue to Chicago’s struggling economy.
