Best Places to Find Free Wi-Fi in New York City, Flickr: Scott BealeStaying connected is essential in a world with Foursquaring locations, tweeting events and Facebooking Friends. Even if your guide book says to leave the smart phone behind and enjoy your vacation, sometimes you realize you need to plug in! Starbucks may be your #1 choice, but honestly, it should be your last. Opt to connect at these five Wi-fi friendly locations.

McDonalds: Clearly, we are not encouraging you to order a supersized Big Mac meal in order to use their Wi-Fi. The convenience of many 24/7 venues in New York City is advantageous to those who need it most. Our tip is to buy a bottle of water and drink it very slowly if you need the Wi-Fi for a while.

NYPL: You might be visiting the NYPL already for its historical context in the city. We all know you may be excited to Skype a friend over Wi-Fi to scream and brag about your NYC vacation, but remember- Shh… this is a library! Manhattan is chock full of public libraries with mediocre hours that last till around dinner time. Note: The Mid-Manhattan library stays open later than most of the other branches.

Barnes and Noble: Getting lost with a book is a fantastic way to pass the time or pick up a New York City guidebook, but sometimes, you need to Google a NYC question you can’t answer. Any B&N store is fully equipped with fast Wi-Fi services at no charge. Just don’t forget to pay for your books; you might feel so cozy thinking you’re at home with fast Wi-Fi and loungey chairs that you’ll walk right out with their books!

Cosi: Good food and good Wi-Fi in the same place? It’s a traveler’s dream come true! Cosi specializes in affordable and healthy semi-gourmet sandwiches. Scattered around trendy areas are Cosi venues with reliable Wi-Fi. Tip: Make sure your device is charged since most locations have no power outlets.

Times Square: At your last resort, if you need Wi-Fi ASAP and you happen to be in the congestion zone, Times Square can be your saving grace. After recent installments to revamp and revitalize Times Square to be more pedestrian friendly, the makeover included sufficient Wi-Fi services. On a nice day, have a seat at the pavilion area with a Starbucks coffee and you’ve got everything you need right in your fingertips!
